Dr. Daniel Albo

MD PhD FACS

Dr. Albo, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine’s Chair of Surgery, leads all Surgery programs for UTRGV. He earned his medical degree Magna Cum Laude at the University of the Republic, Uruguay. He completed his surgical training and a PhD degree at Drexel University, and a complex Surgical Oncology fellowship at UTMD Anderson Cancer Center.

With a Certificate in Medical and Health Care Management from Rice University, Dr. Albo has extensive experience in designing Matrix organizations in Surgery and Cancer. He helped develop Baylor College of Medicine’s Surgical Network as their Vice Chair. At Augusta University, he helped develop the innovative Perioperative Services and Cancer Service Line as their Surgery Chair, Surgeon-In-Chief, and Cancer Service Line Director.

Dr. Albo has held leadership roles in several academic surgical societies. As the President for the Association for Academic Surgery, he helped transform the AAS into a leader in academic surgery.

His clinical expertise has led to several prestigious awards, including the Michael E. DeBakey Distinguished Service Award Medal. He has been consistently listed in America’s Best Doctors, Surgeon, and Surgical Oncologist lists.

A dedicated educator, he has been awarded several prestigious teaching awards. His research work has resulted in over 100 manuscripts and multiple grants. He is an editor of several prestigious Surgery textbooks.

Dr. Albo lists his family as his most significant accomplishment in life. His lovely wife, Luisa (a photographer/artist), and his wonderful children, Camila (a Medical Student) and Nicolas Matías, are the light of his eyes.
