Empowering
Surgical Leaders
Nurturing the Next Generation
Dr. Juan A. Sanchez
MD MPA FACS
After a long and productive career as a cardiothoracic and thoracic transplant surgeon, I transitioned to healthcare administration and physician leadership. I have held several positions in academic surgery, including Department Chair, Program Director, and DIO. My research interests have also shifted from extramurally-funded investigations on myocardial oxidative stress to examining the effectiveness of healthcare delivery systems, with a particular focus on patient safety. In addition to many contributions to the biomedical literature, I have written extensively about organizations, communication and teamwork, quality improvement, and value-based care. I edited the textbook, Surgical Patient Care: Improving Safety, Quality, and Value and have taught the annual systems engineering Post-Graduate Course, "Measure Twice, Cut Once" at the Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons for over a decade. I am Vice-Chair of the College’s Committee on Perioperative Care and was a Past-President of the ACS Connecticut Chapter. I serve on several editorial boards, including the Physician Leadership Journal, in addition to many other peer-review activities. As an Officer in the United States Navy, I served on active duty during the first Gulf War and as a physician to a Marine Corps Reserve Artillery Unit. I currently participate in several philanthropic activities and serve on several boards, including the Baldrige Board of Examiners, the AORN Guidelines Advisory Board, and the National Alliance for Mental Illness.
