Dr. Joseph Lopez
MD MBA
Joseph Lopez is currently a Head & Neck Surgical Oncology Fellow at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York City. Prior to MSKCC, he was a Pediatric Cleft/Craniomaxillofacial Fellow at the Yale Craniofacial, Oral, and Dental Center at the Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital. He completed an integrated plastic surgery residency at the combined Johns Hopkins Hospital-University of Maryland/R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center residency program in Baltimore, MD in 2020. After completion of his chief residency in plastic surgery, Dr. Lopez was awarded the Johns Hopkins Plastic Surgery Resident Teaching Award and the Miller-Coulson Award for Clinical Excellence. While in residency, he completed a post-doctoral research fellowship in stem cell biology and tissue engineering. He received his MD and MBA from Harvard Medical School and Harvard Business School in 2013. While at Harvard, he founded the Harvard chapter of the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) and served on the regional board of the LMSA-Northeast organization. He studied Human Biology at Stanford University and completed an honors thesis in Transplant Immunology.
His interests include pediatric head & neck surgical oncology and craniomaxillofacial reconstruction, clinical innovation, computer-assisted surgery, and healthcare management. As a first-generation college student, born to immigrant parents from El Salvador, Dr. Lopez is passionate about improving healthcare delivery in under-resourced settings and recruiting a diverse future generation of surgeons. He enjoys playing soccer and supporting his favorite European club soccer teams. But most of all, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Elisabeth, and sons, Daniel and Benjamin.
