Executive Director - Latino Surgical Society (LSS)

Location: Remote, with some in-person events, travel to national events and conferences


Reports to: Executive Council and Board of Directors


About the Organization: The Latino Surgical Society (LSS) is a national 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivate, nurture, and advance Latino surgeons. Programs aimed at this mission include mentorship, education, professional development, networking, advocacy, and community-building. LSS fosters leadership development, promotes academic excellence, and works to increase representation and equity within the surgical profession. Membership is open to persons of all backgrounds who share the mission of the LSS.


Position Overview: The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief administrator of LSS and is responsible for executing the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic goals as defined by the Executive Council and Board of Directors. The ED oversees day-to-day operations, finances, membership engagement, fundraising, event management, and partnerships. This role requires strong leadership, strategic thinking, and exceptional organizational and communication skills.


Key Responsibilities


Leadership and Strategy

  • Implement the organization’s strategic plan in alignment with Board priorities.

  • Partner with the Executive Council, Advisory Board, and Committees to drive LSS initiatives and programs.

  • Support Executive Council and Advisory Board meetings, including agenda preparation, minutes, and follow-up actions.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for LSS members, partners, and sponsors.


Operations and Administration

  • Oversee daily operations, workflow, and administrative processes.

  • Manage budgets, financial reporting, and compliance in coordination with the Treasurer.

  • Develop and maintain organizational policies, procedures, and documentation.

  • Supervise interns, volunteers, and contractors.

  • Create, manage, and update job postings on the LSS website to ensure accurate and timely information.

  • Collaborate with Communications and Membership Committees to promote opportunities and maintain alignment with LSS’s mission and branding.


Programs and Events

  • Support planning and execution of national events, including registration, logistics, marketing, and sponsor relations.

  • Coordinate networking events such as luncheons and webinars, including Cafecito con LSS, Cosechando Éxito/Sewing Seeds, and Inside the Operating Room.

  • Collaborate with the Program Committee to ensure key initiatives move forward in a streamlined fashion.


Fundraising and Development

  • Identify, cultivate, and maintain relationships with donors, sponsors, and institutional partners.

  • Collaborate with the Treasurer and Finance Committee to move forward fundraising strategies and operational budget.


Membership and Community Engagement

  • Oversee membership recruitment, renewals, and engagement strategies.

  • Coordinate communications across newsletters, social media, and the LSS website.

  • Collaborate with the Membership Committee to move forward strategies for membership benefits.


Advocacy and Representation

  • Represent LSS at conferences, meetings, and public forums.

  • Build shred programming and partnerships with medical schools, residency programs, and national organizations to create inclusive strategies in surgery.


Qualifications


Required

  • High school graduate or equivalency plus Baccalaureate degree.

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, public health, nonprofit management, healthcare administration, or related field (advanced degree preferred).

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint (or equivalent software).

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and leadership ability.

  • Self-driven, able to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Experience supervising interns, volunteers, or contractors.

  • Ability to work professionally with surgeons and physician leaders.

  • Outstanding communication, negotiation, and project management capabilities.


Preferred/Ideal

  • 2+ years of progressive leadership experience in nonprofit or healthcare operations.

  • Master’s degree in nonprofit management, healthcare administration, public health, or related field.

  • Prior experience in an Executive Director, Program Manager, or senior nonprofit leadership role.

  • Demonstrated success in fundraising, membership growth, and partnership development.


Compensation & Benefits

  • $40-50 per hour (commensurate to experience)
